Practical considerations for recording instructional videos:
When creating an instructional video there are a number of factors worth considering:
-
Scripting: will provide focus for your video and ensure alignment with the lesson’s learning objectives.
-
Context: be aware of any references that may date your video and prevent future use.
-
Content: images and resources used in videos should be copyright free and available for sharing or re-use.
-
Timing: to maximise engagement, videos should be 3-5 minutes in length.
-
Sound: be aware of environmental sounds as well as clarity, pace and tone.
-
Lighting: It is best to face a source of direct light if recording live.
-
Animated videos: can also be created on sites such as mysimpleshow, moovly, powtoon or videoscribe.

Brief DescriptionFlip is a website that allows teachers to create "grids" to facilitate video discussions. Each grid is like a message board where teachers can pose questions and their students can post video responses that appear in a tiled grid display. Students can respond via the Flip app or website with any camera-enabled device or by uploading a previously recorded video. Responses can be 15 seconds to five minutes in length, and a maximum recording time can be set. Flip can be a great way to gather student responses delivered at their own pace without students feeling "on the spot" in the classroom.
Getting StartedTeachers will need to sign up for a free Flip account in order to use the service. Students can use their school email address to sign in. The guides below will support teachers and students in getting started with Flip.
