Practical considerations for recording instructional videos:

When creating an instructional video there are a  number of factors worth considering:

  • Scripting: will provide focus for your video and ensure alignment with the lesson’s learning objectives.

  • Context: be aware of any references that may date your video and prevent future use.

  • Content: images and resources used in videos should be copyright free and available for sharing or re-use.

  • Timing: to maximise engagement, videos should be 3-5 minutes in length.

  • Sound: be aware of environmental sounds as well as clarity, pace and tone.

  • Lighting: It is best to face a source of direct light if recording live.

  • Editing: iMovie or Openshot can be used to edit your video

  • Animated videos: can also be created on sites such as mysimpleshow, moovly, powtoon or videoscribe.

Brief Description:

Edpuzzle is an easy-to-use platform allowing you to unlock the power of videos through simple editing tools. A teacher can engage students through video, pausing and asking questions, checking for understanding and offering clarification where needed. Teachers can also create assessments for those videos and offer feedback to students on the assessments.

Getting Started:

The process is simple:

  1. Create an account. Watch this screencast on how to set up an account: https://youtu.be/Em6eWyy6VPs

  2. Add a class. Teachers can create their own class or add a class from Google Classroom.

  3.  Find a video.  YouTube content including videos from Khan Academy, National Geographic, TED Talks, Veritasium, Numberphile, and Crash Course can be accessed directly in Edpuzzle and edited. Content made on Screencastify can also be imported.

  4. Edit the Video - Teachers can crop the video, add questions (open and closed), voice notes, images, links to websites and assign it to a class.

  5. See results and give students feedback. Teachers can see how long students spent watching the video, see students' answers to questions and offer feedback on those answers.

Brief Description

Flip is a website that allows teachers to create "grids" to facilitate video discussions. Each grid is like a message board where teachers can pose questions and their students can post video responses that appear in a tiled grid display. Students can respond via the Flip app or website with any camera-enabled device or by uploading a previously recorded video. Responses can be 15 seconds to five minutes in length, and a maximum recording time can be set.

Flip can be a great way to gather student responses delivered at their own pace without students feeling "on the spot" in the classroom.

Getting Started

Teachers will need to sign up for a free Flip account in order to use the service. Students can use their school email address to sign in. The guides below will support teachers and students in getting started with Flip.
