On this page you will find a selection of video tutorials from the PDST Digital Technologies team showing a range of online tools which can be used to support teaching, learning and assessment.  These tools have been selected as they can also support distance learning.

Adobe Spark Page

Content creation tool which allows students to show their work. Facilitates remote student collaboration.

 

Suitable for both primary and post-primary students and teachers.

 

iOS app available along with browser version for laptops/PCs and Android devices.

Adobe Spark Video

Content creation tool which allows students to show their work in the form of a video.

 

Suitable for both primary and post-primary students and teachers.  Teachers in particular could use this tool to create short explainer videos for students.

Book Creator

Book Creator can be used by students and/or teachers to create interactive stories, instruction manuals, poetry books with a combination of text, images, audio and video. 

 

Suitable for both primary and post-primary students and teachers.

Edpuzzle

Edpuzzle is a device neutral, online tool that can be used to make video content interactive.  It is also suitable as an assessment tool.  Edpuzzle is particularly useful for teachers using the flipped classroom approach.

Epic

Epic provides teachers pupils with access to online books, to make reading more accessible. Always free for educators, currently free for at-home access due to school closures. Teachers can provide parents of pupils with more information about this free at-home access.

Formative

Formative is a digital tool that supports formative assessment.  Live responses from pupils/students provide teachers with information about whether they may need to modify their instruction.  Work can be graded by the teacher or auto-graded. 

 

Teachers can either create their own content or use pre-made content from a library of thousands of resources.  Suitable for primary and post-primary teachers and students.

Google Forms

Google Forms can be used by teachers to assess students,  encourage them to reflect on their learning or as an exit ticket.  Teachers can analyse the information to evaluate student learning and plan future instruction. 

Suitable for use with upper primary and post-primary learners.

Google Meet

Google Meet is a video meeting tool for schools that use G Suite for Education, which teachers and students can use for online teaching and learning.  This video shows how school administrators can enable Google Meet for teachers and students to collaborate using a computer, laptop, tablet or mobile phone.

Loom

Loom is an online tool which can be used to create screencasts. The pro version of Loom is now free for educators forever.  To find out more click here.

Mentimeter

Mentimeter is an interactive polling tool that provides every learner with a voice.  It can be used to assess prior knowledge or as a formative assessment tool at the end of a topic.   

Suitable for teachers to use with all levels, from primary to post-primary.

Microsoft One Drive

OneDrive is a cloud storage service from Microsoft that allows teachers and students to store all important files securely in one place and then access them virtually anywhere.  Files can also be shared with colleagues or students.

Stream makes it easy for schools using Microsoft 365 to securely share video content with students.

Microsoft Teams

Microsoft Teams is the hub for collaboration in Office 365 that integrates the teachers & students, educational content, and other tools.  It has a video conference feature that can be useful to support distance learning.

Microsoft Word

Microsoft Word Online can be used by teachers to assign work to students.  Students can collaborate on a doc whether they are together in class or separately at home.

Nearpod

Nearpod is a platform that combines teacher content with formative assessment.  Teachers can assign self-paced lessons which students can access in class or at home.  

 

Suitable for post-primary students and upper primary pupils.

Quizizz

Teachers can explore pre-created quizzes or create their own. Quizzes can be played using any device, e.g. phone, tablet, laptop or PC either in class or remotely.  They can be assigned as homework and a due date set.

Screencast-o-matic

Screencast-o-matic is an online tool which, as the name suggests, can be used to create screencasts.

Suitable for teachers to create screencasts and narrate over existing teacher resources, e.g. slides, powerpoints, etc. and share with primary pupils or post-primary students.

Showbie

Showbie is a tool that can be used by teachers to assign, collect and review student work.  It is available as as a web-based tool, iOS app or Android app.

Socrative

Socrative is suitable for face-to-face or remote assessment.  Teachers can launch quizzes, exit tickets or receive instant feedback from students to a quick question.

Wakelet is an online tool that allows teachers to save, organise, and curate content on a particular topic from multiple websites in one themed place.  This can then be shared with pupils/students.

A software for creating whiteboard explainer animations automatically. Pictures and text are drawn out in sequence on a virtual whiteboard for a uniquely engaging visual effect.

Write Reader

Write Reader is a digital platform that allows pupils/students to create an online book. Learners can also record themselves to create a talking book.

YouTube Playlists

A YouTube playlist is a collection of videos linked to a particular topic or subject, which plays automatically.  Teachers can create a playlist of videos and share them with their pupils/students.
